The Classic City Band of Athens/Clarke County, GA, is the oldest continuously functioning community band in Georgia. Founded
in 1976 for the purpose of preserving the rich cultural heritage of the American Concert Band, this non-profit organization
gives free concerts throughout the year in Athens, GA, and in nearby communities, such as Madison, Watkinsville, Hartwell
and Greensboro, GA. The band's repertoire includes all types of music: marches, jazz, pop, overtures, show tunes, excerpts
from operas and musicals, traditional and classical selections.
You may have heard the band play on the Fourth of July at Bishop Park in Athens, or at a holiday concert at the Georgia State
Botanical Gardens, or on the streets in downtown Athens at a "Blue Sky" noon hour concert. It has performed in Watkinsville
at the Spring and Fall Festivals, at the Madison Cultural Center and for the Spring Festival in Greensboro, GA.
On September 7, 2006, Mayor Heidi Davison of Athens/Clarke County GA and the Commission issued a proclamation declaring The
Classic City Band "the official municipal band of Athens, Georgia."
